Lieutenant James Cook left Plymouth in command of the HMS Endeavour on Friday, 26th August 1768, to observe the transit of Venus in Tahiti. He would than go on to follow secret orders to search for the surmised Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land".

He went on to explore what is now New Zealand and the east coast of Australia, on what is known as his first voyage.Captain Cook's journal from the journey was later published and is available from Project Gutenberg,
